Mayor previews “In One A-Chord: Lexington Sacred Music Festival”

 Mayor Linda Gorton today joined Dr. Everett McCorvey at First Presbyterian Church to preview “In One A-Chord: Lexington Sacred Music Festival,” taking place in Lexington Sept. 21 – 28, 2025.

“Our Sacred Music Festival is sure to lift you up,” Gorton said. “This celebration is a wonderful opportunity to come together, celebrate great talent, and showcase the music and spirit that makes our city so special.”

“In One A-Chord: Sacred Music Festival,” presented by CHI Saint Joseph Health, is a week-long celebration of the music that fills Lexington’s churches, chapels, sanctuaries, synagogues, mosques, and concert halls. The festival includes 25 sacred music experiences that are open to all. Events will take place at a variety of locations.

“Music has the power to unite, to inspire, and to move us,” said Dr. Everett McCorvey, executive producer of “In One A-Chord.” “This sacred music festival, the first of its kind in Lexington, creates the opportunity to celebrate local musicians, singers, arrangers and performers who make up our city's rich and vibrant sacred musical landscape.” McCorvey serves as a member of the Mayor’s 250Lex Commission.

Sacred music elevates the human spirit, has the power to heal, and brings listeners together in community to celebrate not only our commonality, but the beauty in what makes us unique and different, McCorvey said.

First Presbyterian Church is hosting several events throughout the week.

• 8 a.m. Deep Listening: Contemplating the ‘Sacred’ in Music
• 10:30 a.m. Celebrating the Flute through Well-loved Hymns and Spirituals
• 6 p.m. The Vivaldi Gloria presented by the Inaugural Lexington All-City Chorus with special appearances and music by Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra, Uniting Voices Lexington and soloists from the American Spiritual Ensemble at Singletary Center for the Arts. 

Lexington church concert to promote “unity and diversity”

Lexington’s Calvary Baptist Church is putting on a free concert this weekend, meant to promote unity and diversity in central Kentucky.

The church’s “Together in Unity” concert is bringing together two different choirs from the city: one from St. Luke’s Methodist Church and the youth choir Univing Voices Lexington.

Music will include choral pieces alongside solo instrumental works and jazz combos.

Monty Stallins is the pastor at Calvary Baptist Church. He says they’ve put on the concert for the past three years as a “gift” to the community.

“Unity means coming together in the midst of our diversity, finding that sense of community where we're sharing our lives together from lots of different places, from lots of different perspectives.”

Stallins says anyone is invited to attend, with no ticket required. The concert starts at 3 p.m. on Sunday in the church’s sanctuary.

KY welcomes ‘coldest air of the season’ as arctic blast moves into MLK Day celebrations

Despite the cold temperatures, celebration plans for Martin Luther King Jr. Day could continue on Monday. In Lexington, a Freedom March is planned to begin at 1 p.m. at the Central Bank Center. A commemorative program is scheduled at 2 p.m. with musical guests, Uniting Voices Chicago and Uniting Voices Lexington. The keynote speaker is Reverend Dr. Kevin W. Cosby of Simmons College of Kentucky.

This is the question fueling the theme for this year’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration, taking place this Monday in Lexington.

Alexander joins this week’s "Behind the Blue" to talk about this year’s event. The theme for the 2024 MLK Celebration is “MLK in 2024: Eyes Off the Prize?” and he says that’s the question Rev. Kevin Cosby, president of Simmons College of Kentucky in Louisville, will be answering as the keynote speaker.

Making a return appearance this year will be the Uniting Voices Chicago choir, who will be joining Uniting Voices Lexington, a new group that has come together just this year under the leadership of Michael Preacely, DMA.
